How I got a “new” MacBook Pro at no cost

About two weeks ago, my old Macbook Pro (a 15 inch Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz unibody circa 2008) suddenly showed signs of distress. The LCD screen only shows color distortions when I boot my mac. The hard drive is warm to touch. Shutting down the unit and then restarting allowed me to boot and then log in. After about 4 cycles of restarting, my mac screen went blank and I couldn’t boot anymore, even if my hard drive is churning active. What the? All of a sudden?

I felt stunned. I was a firm believer Macs are indestructible breed of PCs. Thus, I never searched  for “bugs” on my model of Mac when I bought it. A potentially catastrophic mistake.

a toasted mac pro!

I searched  the net  for a diagnosis to this kind of mac problem.  If my logic is correct, this Apple article implied that a defective GPU packaging possibly toasted my MBP’s logic board.  The culprit is a batch of  NVIDIA 8600GM GPU soldered to the logic board of an MBP similar and  manufactured at the same time as my MBP.  Allegedly, such “defective” GPU melts on average, warm temperatures  (other non-defective GPUs do not) and possibly short circuit the MBP’s logic board. If an MBP shows video distortion like what’s described in this article, manufactured around this year (late 2007-2008), and has this specific GPU, Apple offers an extended replacement program.

I called up Apple support (thru their toll free hotline) and the personnel instructed me to bring my MBP to the nearest apple authorized service provider (AASP). Should my MBP “pass” the diagnostic tests made by the techs at this AASP, my MBP would be repaired at no cost. Heaven knows how stringent these diagnostic criteria could be. But I don’t have any other choice either. The outlook of me shelling some 20-30K for logic board repairs is out of the equation.

The tech at this AASP, performed a series of tests on my MBP as per instruction of Apple. His preliminary diagnosis was lethal, something that might not be just limited to my MBP’s GPU. It’s a logic board problem. Logic board repair or replacement outside of its warranty period is expensive, not to mention impractical. You might be better off buying a new, faster and higher valued mac than replace a mac’s logic board. Worst, logic board replacement will not be covered by the GPU recall’s extended warranty or trade in. The GPU recall extended warranty and trade in program covers only up to 3 years from the date of purchase. My MBP is 4 years old. Bad news, but I’m not giving up just yet.

I called back the tech at AASP and explained  why the logic board possibly got affected. I’m no better techie than the tech at the AASP. But you don’t need to be a genius to understand the logic behind this logic board problem.  If the GPU is soldered  to the logic board, is defective and melts at high temperatures, chances are it short circuited and destroyed the logic board too.

If this is the case, my MBP should still be replaced because the defective GPU crashed the logic board. The tech was helpful enough to refer back again my “case” to Apple. He gave case number and asked me to call Apple support and talk about my concern. After several discussions with the customer support and them interviewing me several times, plus the shuffling between me and the tech at AASP, Apple made me one surprising decision. They’re going to make an exception in my case and replace my logic board with a new one. They’ll send a new logic board to the AASP and then the AASP will do the repairs, all at no cost to me.

I was speechless. Replacement at no cost. A new logic board almost meant a new MBP. My persistence paid off.

iCloud, App Store, iTunes and Facetime fix Hackintosh Lion 10.7.2

I’m upgrading to Lion OS specifically because of this feature- the iCloud. So I was quite frustrated when iCloud “told” me this when I tried to login after upgrading to 10.7.2 :

Your Apple ID is valid but is not an iCloud account

The same thing happens when I tried to log in to my itunes or app store accounts. Denied. Or it was not recognized by Apple or some other error messages.

I did cross check my itunes and app store id on my IOS 5 devices’s iCloud and they are all working. So I figured out this must be something related to hackintosh upgrades.

I did find quite a number of “fix” but they all didn’t work for my hackintosh build. The first two “fix” I tried crashed my hackintosh. I must warn you though that this may not necessarily work for you, or crash your hackintosh (slim chance) or if you have a hackintosh with a raid volume, it may also crash or would not boot at all. But personally, I find this the simpliest and less drastic way of fixing that icloud bug. And it worked!

  1. Download EFI Studio and open it up.
  2. In the dropdown menu for devices, create a device string for your on board LAN.
  3. Paste that string to your org.chamelon.com.plist
  4. I deleted the “ethernetbuiltin” string.
  5. Reboot.
Here is part of an example of your org.chamelon.com.plist
<key>ethernetbuiltin</key>
<string>no</string>
<key>device-properties</key>
<string>paste the string here</string>
Now you have a working Icloud, itunes, facetime account!. Enjoy!
(Note: Please comment below if this didn’t work for your hackintosh build)

Pros and cons of updating your iphone’s IOS to 5.0.1

I recently updated a jailbroken iphone 4′s 4.3.1 IOS to 5.0.1. Despite the scary comments I got on updating to IOS 5 (especially on jailbroken devices),  I updated a guinea iphone 4 using the bb preserving-red snow method. This method is based on the exploits made by @chronic dev team and @pod2g on IOS 5. The untethered jailbreak is all too irresistible for gadget freaks like me.

My first impressions with the IOS 5.0.1 updated iPhone 4 are good. Here are some (so far):

  1. Battery usage is better, more efficient and with a longer battery life. This iPhone can be used without recharging for as long as 48-72 hours even if I’m connected to WIFI or 3G most of the time. That’s 1-2 days longer battery life when it was still on 4.3.1. I haven’t tried continuous talk time though, but this look promising to me.
  2. Clarity and smoother fonts and pics. The clean rounded borders is pleasing to the eye.
  3. Of course, the use of icloud is an advantage to frequently mobile geek like me. Apps available on my iphone are available to all my other IOS devices, macpro and hackintosh. I can also lock my other devices whenever someone stole it from me. Email and calendars will be endlessly syncing so I’m free of updating it in every device I use.
  4. IOS 5 is more responsive and faster than its predecessor. There’s this “lag” I see every time I open my IOS device, but thats all I’ve noticed so far.
  5. Better Itunes access and syncing.

Updating to IOS 5.0.1 has its own “clear and present” danger of course:

  1. It’s so easy for you to click the button that nags “update your IOS” every time theres an update available for your IOS. As all of you jailbroken iphone owners knew by now, accidentally updating your iphone via itunes also updates its base bands, thus destroying your unlock and making your sim unusable.
  2. Some updated devices have problem connecting with icloud, particularly those jailbroken phones with incompatible basebands. Haven’t encountered this yet but some techie reported this also.
  3. Some apps update on IOS 5 requires another purchase.
  4. Lastly, if your not techie or brave enough to update your jailbroken your iphone, but did so, there’s a big chance you’ll lose your unlock, rendering your iphone’s telco’s connection useless. So give the job to someone really knowledgeable about this. That’s not me of course.

So have you updated your IOS to 5.0? What was your first impression? Are you happy/not happy with it? Please comment below for your answers.
